Tamanna’s Story

DISRUPTING THE CYCLE
Featured Story

Eight-year-old Tamanna was playing in the fields near her home, but she wasn’t safe at all. She was born into poverty and subjected to a life of abuse, until the cycle was broken.

Uma was considered a lower-class, servile citizen. Because of her status, she is oppressed as a sex-slave and treated with disregard and disgust. Her daughter grew up in this environment of oppression and abuse, turning to prostitution as her only means of income. Trapped in this lifestyle she became pregnant and baby Tamanna was born. The cycle of exploitation carries on from one generation to another, putting Tamanna at incredibly high risk.

Last year, her mother migrated to another village for work, leaving eight-year-old Tamanna under the care of her grandmother
Grandma was kind; but due to her numbing alcoholism, she was unable to supervise Tamanna properly or send her to school regularly.

Most afternoons while grandma was napping, Tamanna would play under the tree shading their hut.

Unfortunately, this pattern was noticed by predators in their community. Taking advantage of her vulnerability, a couple of young men preyed on Tamanna. They took her to a nearby field and raped her. Subsequently, they repeated the offense, and began to pimp her out to other interested parties.

They threatened to kill her if she told anyone.

Traumatized, Tamanna stopped speaking.

Meanwhile, grandma remained unaware. The abuse continued.

Eventually, a teacher who was walking home from the local school, heard cries from the field. He notified a local government worker. However, the exploiters belonged to a wealthy and influential family in the village, so the worker was unwilling to press official charges. Thankfully, he informed Tamanna’s mother and our staff about the issue; and she requested we provide shelter for her daughter. Young Tamanna is now living in one of our safe homes.

When Tamanna first came to us, she was scared and anxious. Tormented by nightmares, she screamed through the night; and barely spoke to the other girls. She even refused food, including candy.

Thankfully, with the loving support of our team, she has begun her recovery. Her night terrors have stopped and she is enjoying her meals. She has also made a friend and is often seen chatting and playing.

Tamanna still needs deep healing and recovery

but she is in a safe place.

She has begun English lessons at our shelter and is learning new words. She admires her teacher and hopes to also teach one day!

Her mother calls consistently, and expresses her gratitude to Destiny Rescue and our partnering organization for this intervention in Tamanna’s life.

B
ecause of Destiny Rescue’s supporters and dedicated staff, Tamanna can play with her new friend, practice her lessons and live out her childhood without fear of abuse.
